IB DIPLOMA

We are an IB World School since March 1996. The IB Diploma Programme is mandatory for every student in Grade 11 and 12. In order to be graduated, students are expected to be successful in their IB courses.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a rigorous pre-university course of studies, leading to examinations that meet the needs of highly motivated secondary school students between the ages of 16 and 19. Designed as a comprehensive two-year curriculum that allows its graduates to meet the requirements of various national educational systems, the diploma model is based on the pattern of no single country but incorporates the best elements of many. The programme is available in English, French and Spanish.

The curriculum is displayed in the shape of a hexagon with six academic areas surrounding the core. Subjects are studied concurrently and students are exposed to the two great traditions of learning — the humanities and the sciences.

With the support and expertise of the faculty, students operate in an atmosphere which stimulates them to explore and to excel. Personal abilities and future goals usually determine a Candidate’s curriculum, but the IB Programme is structured to accommodate every motivated, sincere, and serious student enrolled at BIS.

The curriculum is made up of the DP core and six subject groups.

To qualify for the IB Diploma, a student must successfully complete six IB subjects with three at the higher level and three at the Standard Level. They must also meet all requirements of the Theory of Knowledge course, Extended Essay and CAS.

The six subjects must include the following:

Group 1: Studies in Literature (first language) English and Turkish

Group 2: Language B/Ab initio: (language acquisition)

Group 3: Economics, Psychology, Turkey in the 20th Century, Environmental System and Societies, Global Politics

Group 4: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental System and Societies

Group 5: Mathematics, Analysis, and Mathematics, Applications

Group 6: Visual Arts, Theatre, Music, or a second subject from groups 1, 2, 3 or 4

Made up of the three required components, the DP core aims to broaden students’ educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills.

The three core elements are:

  • Theory of knowledge, in which students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know.
  • The extended essay, which is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper.
  • Creativity, activity, service,(CAS) in which students complete a project related to those three concepts.
